New York motorcycle insurance for high-powered bikes

8/25/2011 12:30:00 PM
When taking out motorcycle insurance, New York riders have to consider how the type of bike that they ride can  affect their premium. Typically, a higher-powered or modified motorcycle will attract a higher rate. If you’re looking to buy a new motorbike, it can pay to check the likely insurance premiums before you make the purchase. The following statistics on Supersports and other high-powered bikes might help explain why insurers charge more for these types of vehicles:

Supersports are your high-powered variety of motorcycles, and have greater horsepower than conventional bikes. These bikes are essentially racing bikes modified for street use, and unsurprisingly are popular among riders in the younger age demographic. Supersports are by far the most dangerous bikes, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), with a fatality rate that is four times higher than any other motorcycle.

In 2005, Supersports registered 22.5 deaths per 10,000 drivers, while other sports models registered 10.7. In comparison, standards and cruisers had 5.7 fatalities per 10,000, and touring bikes had 6.5 fatalities.

In accidents involving Supersport and other sport models, speed and driver error were bigger factors in fatalities than they were in those involving other motorcycles. This is not surprising, as sport motorbikes are built for speed.

So, if you’re in the market for a powerful new motorcycle, and affordable New York motorcycle insurance is important, get some insurance quotes first – you might suddenly find you have a preference for a more conservative ride!
